American super group, A Perfect Circle, have released their first bit of new material since their 2004 album, eMOTIVe. The track is called The Doomed and it was released on the 20th of October via BMG Rights Management.
A Perfect Circle are currently working on a full length studio album which is expected to arrive in 2018. Not much else had been known about it other than that it is being produced by Dave Sardy until this single release.
Being a super group who have been away for a while there have obviously been some changes in the line up in that time. A Perfect Circle 2017 is vocalist Maynard James Keenan (Tool), guitarist Billy Howerdel (Ashes Divide), guitarist James Iha (Tinted Windows, ex-Smashing Pumpkins), bassist Matt McJunkins (Eagles of Death Metal, The Beta Machine) and drummer Jeff Friedl (Puscifer, The Beta Machine).
Maynard James Keenan released the following statement before dropping The Doomed – “Almost fourteen years have passed since we released eMOTIVe. A new release is long overdue. In light of this current difficult and polarized social, spiritual and political climate, we artist types need to open our big mouths and share the light a little louder.”

The Doomed is quite an aggressive track. It runs for over 4 and a half minutes and has a lot of interesting sounds and rhythms on it. It is also a heavily politicised track, taking a firm swipe at the class system. Lyrics like “Blessed are the rich, may we labour to deliver them more” make their point well and will resound with many people these days. Musically there is a lot going on. It starts with huge echoing drums and some eerie effects. It builds into a nice crunching rhythm with very loud drums.
There are musical interludes with the sound of something like a toy music box which then gets joined by some huge guitar melodies. The vocals are clean but with a nice punch to them and a bit of ferocity. There is a lot of rhythm and groove and a strong sounding bass throughout but the guitar melodies, leads and solos are the stand out element. The song tricks you with quietened interludes, one of which almost fades out to silence. These are always followed by huge sounding guitar leads that will excite you and have the hair standing on the back of your neck.
The Doomed is a really strong song and a great return for a band that have been away for so long. It sounds fresh and modern and is lyrically relevant. The guitars are so solid and the song structure is exciting. The drums and bass sound fantastic and Keenan’s voice is as good as you would expect. It should raise excitement levels for the new album to huge heights.
