Album Review: Pulvis Et Umbra – Atmosfear (Self-Released)

Italian band, Pulvis Et Umbra’s new album was released in February 2017. The solo project of Damy Mojitodka, Atmosfear is a wonderful blend of death & thrash metal.

Atmosfear 1

The bar for Atmosfear is set very early on with the rousing opener, The Soul Collectress. Chaotic sounding vocals backed up by exciting riffs, some seriously good rhythm & just enough catchy hooks to make you sit up & take notice.

One of the more exciting things about Atmosfear is just how unique it sounds. The vocals are varied sometimes having a whispered style that scratches at the back of the mind & at others a gurgling evil quality. Flowing perfectly alongside fantastic death metal tunes & the occasional melodic moment results in a serious contender for album of the year.

No two songs sound the same. Contrast the slower, disjointed stop-start style of Virus against the 3 minute assault of Darkest Sorrow. They’re very different songs but equally as intriguing for different reasons. Darkest Sorrow in particular is a masterpiece of guitar soloing, a moment that sends electricity shooting through you.

Even the less interesting song, Divinty or Icon still sounds leagues ahead of a lot that has come out this year. This minor stumble is quickly corrected with the glorious chugging riffs of The Price of Trust. It re-energises the album as it nears the final few songs ensuring all your attention is directed back on it.

Pulvis Et Umbra drop the mic having set fire to many of their contemporaries. Atmosfear’s triple header of the stirring Can’t Handle, the furious sounding Blinded by Thoughts & the futuristic effects-laden finale of Predominio Tecnologico see things off in style.

A thrilling album.
