Nanowar of Steel – XX Years of Steel (Napalm Records)

Have you experienced Nanowar of Steel live? They’re fun, they’re energetic, and they have tons of catchy tunes to sing, dance, and head bang to. If you’ve never seen them live before, try and rectify that in the future, but for now… have a listen to XX Years of Steel, which does a phenomenal job of capturing the silly mania of their show.

Wizard Tattoo – Living Just For Knife Fighting (Garage Fire Recordings)

The three cover tracks aren’t the only reason for returning listeners to check out this album. Even though it combines two previously released EPs, Wizard Tattoo meticulously planned this so that the full album would be even more immersive. While both EPs were easy to sink into, being four tracks long each, meant it wasn’t long before the bottom was reached. Now, we have eleven tracks overall, and new depths to sink to.

Dwelled – Suffering Heritage (Self Released)

The intensity doesn’t let up for a second, so be warned. Dwelled’s intentions are to leave every single person seeing stars.

Svarttjern – Draw Blood (Soulseller Records)

This new offering of hate and horror from the entity that is Svarttjern offers no real surprises, no real inventiveness, and no real reason to get excited. Except Svarttjern’s display of blackened metal is so strong, so filled with vigour, and so gleefully horror laden, that the lack of originality becomes immaterial in favour of simply wallowing in the darkness with the band.

The Malefic Grip – Virtue and Industry (Self Released)

This is a more evolved sounding band who have clearly found their comfort zone. A turbulent place that offers up a cacophony of garish industrial sounds blended with filthy sludge heaviness and the chaos of noise rock. It is delightfully unlistenable at times, with The Malefic Grip showcasing so much creativity over its five tracks.

Six Months of Sun – Creatures (Smoke Records / Urgence Disk)

It has actually been around six years of gloom, because that’s how long it has been since we have had new music from Six Months of Sun. Happily, the clouds have finally parted, and figurative rays of sunshine have arrived, but it comes with weighty intensity that creates feelings of anxiety. There’s danger here, and it comes from instrumental heaviness that is highly inventive and consistently interesting.
