Evergrey – Theories of Emptiness (Napalm Records)

A word like ‘legend’ exists to describe a band like this, even if personally, I’ve not always been enamoured with what they’ve produced. Which kind of sums up this new album. At times, a phenomenally pleasing album with big anthemic progressive metal tracks dripping in melancholic tones. At others, just a bit dull.

Moon Reaper – Black Sun Sorcery (Self Released)

If you’re not aware of who Moon Reaper are, there may be no finer record to help familiarise yourself with them. This new EP, a four-track behemoth, showcases an evolved and confident band with fierceness in their souls, but with gripping tendrils of melody and darkened atmosphere.

Archives – No Bliss In Ignorance (Self Released)

You might have expected something great from Archives, but this great? They have smashed it out of the park here.

Nordic Giants – Origins (Self Released)

Be immersed and be richly rewarded for your investment. Happily, with music this creative, clever, and captivating, it’s so easy to give Nordic Giants the time and room to do this.

The Fires Below – Thorns (Self Released)

Based off this EP, there have to be big things in store for this band. It’s just too damn good of a release.

Severe Torture – Torn from the Jaws of Death (Season of Mist)

A band that needs little introduction, but a band that hasn’t been given the same level of respect that many of other death metal legends enjoy. Severe Torture haven’t just been creating death metal for a long time, they’ve been creating exceptionally strong death metal for a long time. A consistency that continues with Torn from the Jaws of Death and the ten tracks that make up its gargantuan heavy sound.

Candy – It’s Inside You (Relapse Records)

The word ‘experimental’, in musical terms, was created for bands like Candy. A band who offer up a maddening blend of hardcore, metal, industrial, EDM, and so much more. You don’t listen to Candy, you experience them, and this new album is the group at their height of their experimental powers.

Red Vanilla – Days of Grey (Self Released)

The biggest takeaway being how this release shows off the beauty in this alt-rock band’s sound.

Ætheria Conscientia – The Blossoming (Frozen Records)

The magnitude of Ætheria Conscientia’s creative abilities is simply startling, and across six epic examples, they make the madness of their progressive black metal sound unforgettable. While comparisons to the likes of Oranssi Pazuzu are fair, Ætheria Conscientia are unequivocally their own thing.

Gurt – Satan Etc. (Self Released)

A lot of fun can be had within the company of Gurt, but don’t let that fool you into believing they don’t know how to deliver compelling blasts of heaviness. It might have been a while since we’ve heard from them, but they’re as rambunctious as ever on this brand-new album.

DVRK – Infinite Reminiscence (Season of Mist)

DVRK Infinite Reminiscence Artwork

Infinite Reminiscence is an interesting EP and DVRK clearly have a lot going for them. They capture a very modern sound and are clearly packed with plenty of talent and creativity in the band. The 6 tracks, though short, show quite a wide variety of ideas though, at their core, it’s good old deathcore.

Between the Killings – The Killing Quartet Vol. 2: Omnipotence (Comatose Music)

This is death metal, but death metal that is battered, bloodied, and brutalised by a band with a lust for gore.
