Weekly Release Roundup – Friday 19th April, 2024
From rock to doom, to atmospheric metal and extreme, to grim sludge and heavy death, it’s a big week for releases and we’ve got a list for you to check out. All these releases are out today!
Balance of Power – Fresh From The Abyss (Massacre Records)
With a strong overall anthemic sound, Balance of Power have an old-school rock vibe at times, but mark themselves out as something more unique with their highly impressive progressive ways. Fresh from the Abyss is an apt title, as it comes from the same dark corners of so many rock and metal bands before, but has a freshness that makes it more interesting.

Tomorrow’s Rain – Ovdan (AOP Records)
A listening experience like little else this year, and a listening experience that will unlikely not be topped for the rest of this year. Partially, because Tomorrow’s Rain are an experimental band, and partially because it’s an album packed with guests. It is an understatement to say that Tomorrow’s Rain have gone above and beyond here, and the result is something quite special indeed.

Ixion – Extinction (Finisterian Dead End/Season of Mist)
I can see Extinction hitting the mark with any lover of any style of atmospheric music. If nothing else it has just left me absolutely desperate to hear the rest of Evolution, and listen to it in its entirety. Until the next part comes, Extinction will be more than satisfying as it is such an astonishingly accomplished piece of art.

Vilify – Fever Dream (Self Released)
With all of those weapons in their armoury, Vilify should have no issues standing out from the crowd and Fever Dream is a great showcase of their talents.

Couch Slut – You Could Do It Tonight (Brutal Panda Records)
Aggressively honest, unashamedly coarse, and undeniably extreme, it’s Couch Slut and they are something else. Uniquely ugly sounding, but with an addictive quality that keeps you listening on, You Could Do it Tonight is a game-changing record.

Grim. That is the first word that comes to mind upon hearing this album.

Sundowner – Lysergic Ritual (Self Released)
Sundowner promise filthy and ugly sounding sludge and that is what we get with Lysergic Ritual. Eight tracks of uncouth noise, with varying tempos, and the nasty edge overall.

High On Fire – Cometh The Storm (MNRK Heavy)
High on Fire seem reinvigorated as of late and the proof is in this groovy, fun, and heavy rock album. An album that isn’t doing anything particularly new, but that hardly matters when you get something that hits as hard as it does.

Dvne – Voidkind (Metal Blade Records)
Dvne… a band that make a mockery of the word ‘unique’. Dvne… a band that makes a mockery of the words ‘genre bending’. Dvne… a band that makes a mockery of all preconceived notions of what ‘post-metal’, ‘progressive metal’, and ‘sludge metal’ should sound like.
