Kerry King – From Hell I Rise (Reigning Phoenix Music)
From Hell I Rise isn’t going to change the world, but that’s not really the point. King didn’t want to disappear into the mists of retirement and has sought to continue his own personal brand of thrash-based dominance. Mission well and truly accomplished, chances are you will have some sore neck muscles come the end.

Cognitive – Abhorrence (Metal Blade Records)
Delivering a slice of utter brilliance that combines the best of their past selves with forward thinking shifts via the medium of tighter song writing that drops some of the egregious ‘techy’ aspects. All in favour of a more anthemic heavy sound that will have you head-banging from the beginning, right to the very end.

Trails of Anguish – Scathed Gaping Misery (Hessian Firm)
Combining two EPs worth of music, resulting in a ten-track album of raw, hateful, rancorous, and hellish sounding black metal.

(Un)Worthy treating the listener with all the love and care one might expect from a rabid hound. The vision is realised, and once you’ve stopped rocking yourself back and forth from the trauma, you’ll be coming back to this time and time again.

Mutes – …buried where you stand (Self Released)
Mutes promise a stripped back experience on this record, one that aims to capture the sound of their live performances, and in that regard, it certainly delivers. This new album has a rawer and unpolished sound, but for a band that showcases a style of post-punk and alternative rock as Mutes do, that works extremely well.
