Top 10 Zombie Games of 2021

Whether it’s Spooky Season or not, zombie games are always a great choice. An action-packed undead adventure is never a bad idea! There are so many different game genres that include some sort of zombie characters, from games suitable for younger players to some of the extremely realistic, gory, and violent games only suitable for a more mature audience. There’s a zombie game out there for everyone.

Here are the top 10 zombie games of 2021:

Back 4 Blood

Turtle Rock Studios presents Back 4 Blood and it has already been embroiled in a bit of controversy. Many zombie game fans feel that the game is extremely similar to Left 4 Dead, and it has been given the moniker of “spiritual successor” to the well-received title. Indeed, the names are remarkably similar, and so is the gameplay. The game was created by the creators of Left 4 Dead, who, unfortunately, do not have the rights to create an official sequel.

Resident Evil Village

Hailed as one of the creepiest games in game history, Resident Evil Village has been on the horizon for a while. The first-person survival horror game is the long-awaited sequel to 2017’s Resident Evil: Biohazard. Your player character is Ethan Winters, who is searching tirelessly for his missing daughter. He finds himself in the titular village, packed to the brim with evil, mutant zombie creatures. He must fight, both for his life and to see his daughter again.

World War Z Aftermath

Even outside of the gaming world, the title World War Z is famous. As the title implies, the game is based on the blockbuster film of the same name. In this next evolution, the player is tasked with turning the tide, pushing back zombies’ hordes, and reclaiming earth for the humans. This title features many exciting locations, such as Vatican City, Rome, and the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The deluxe edition of the game features a bonus weapons pack as well as weapon skins. Early next year, there will be some next-gen enhancements available to add on.

After the Fall

There’s no time to catch your breath in this exciting title from Vertigo Games. In After the Fall, the player is hurled headlong into a post-apocalyptic, virtual reality version of Los Angeles, where they must fight for their survival against hordes of the undead. The zombies are not our only enemy, as you must also battle against the freezing weather. The game encourages you to find out which style of combat suits you best and use your newfound skills to fulfill your duties as a Harvest Bringer. Your job is to venture out from the underground homes that humanity has been forced into and take on the Snowbreed (zombies) to secure the resources you need to survive.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Set in 1964, Dead War is the follow-up to 2015’s Zombie Army Trilogy. The game takes us back in time to Milan, Italy, where we learn that the zombies released from the Hellmouth by Hitler (yes, you read that right) are still wreaking havoc. The Nazi dead are just as much trouble as they were when they were alive but can be destroyed if they’re taken on in small numbers.

As hordes of Nazi zombies push back the players, it becomes apparent that something is different this time around. New foes are on the battlefield; demon mutants and evil spirits have now joined the fray. Eventually, the players are made privy to the fact that Hitler was not destroyed at the end of the last game, as they thought, but only banished to Hell. Here he makes use of his minions and harnesses Hell’s energy to build himself a formidable new army to exact his revenge.

Zombie Rollerz

This game is a wacky combination of pinball and tower defense from Firefly Games. Players will mount their Pinball Ballista and use it to explore the constantly shifting setting in a fun and funky cartoon world. Of course, as with any zombie game, these cute characters need to make sure they stay a step ahead of the hungry zombies. At the end of each turn, you’ll need to face down a zombie boss, and you’ll get a different one on every level. The game shifts and changes at the end of each play-through, so it’s a good one to come back to again and again, as things won’t be the same each time. Once you’ve defeated all the bosses, you can earn yourself the title of Pinball Warrior.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human

The first installment of this series has been legendary ever since its release. The in-game graphics were genuinely incredible, and it looks like the sequel will live up to its hype. There have been significant delays in releasing this much-anticipated sequel, but thankfully now it is scheduled to release on December 7th of this year. Dying Light 2 is an open-world, first-person apocalyptic RPG (a mouthful, I know) and features a new protagonist called Aiden Caldwell. Since the parkour was so well received in the first game, Techland made sure that the new protagonist had those skills available too.

Seed of the Dead

This one is a little bit out there and definitely only for mature players. The game’s unusual plot follows the players through a dating game to impress the ladies. One of the things you have to do to win over the girl of your dreams is to prove your worth by taking down a variety of zombies. It’s post-apocalyptic, it’s anime-based, it’s strange, and it’s awesome. If you like first-person shooters and strange scenarios, give this one a try.

Undying

Brought to us by Vanimals, this indie title follows a mother and her young son as they journey to a safe location. The journey is fraught with danger as they have to avoid the zombies that now populate the world. At the start of the game, the mother is bitten by one of the undead. This means that she only has a short window of time in which to get her son to safety before she herself turns into one of the beasts she is trying to protect him from. Anling must teach Cody, her son, everything he knows to survive.

Ghosts and Goblins Resurrection

Many will be pleased to know that 2D side-scrolling games are still a popular genre, even in 2021. In this game, you play the role of King Arthur. As you make your way through the demon realm, you’ll encounter zombies and several other bad guys that are just begging for a good beat down. This installment of the franchise features a co-op mode so that you can play with your friends!
