The Greatest Zombies Games of All Time
Round these parts, we like a good zombie movie. Fortunately, over recent years the genre has experienced a huge resurgence, no doubt encouraged by the runaway success of the 11-season-deep zombie show epic, The Walking Dead. Among the most compelling zombie movies to hit the silver screen this side of the 2010s you will find 2013’s World War Z starring Brad Pitt, the crazy daddy & zombie-daughter caper Maggie featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger (2015), a stunning sequel to the legendary Zombieland in Zombieland 2: Double Tap (2019), and the hilarious “zom-com” Warm Bodies. Truly, we’re in something of a golden age for zombie content. But sometimes you want to be a little more pro-active when facing down a zombie apocalypse. At such times, firing up your favorite games console and getting in on the hair raising action with a great zombie game is the only thing that will suffice. Below we’re taking a look at the greatest zombie games of all time across all gaming platforms. From top tier terror, to pixelated panic and everything in between, you’re sure to find an undead game here to tickle your fancy.
Xbox
Resident Evil is the OG zombie survival game. Since the first entry scared the jeepers out of everyone in 1996, the series has gone from strength to strength. It could be argued the latest title, Resident Evil: Village, available on the Xbox Series X/S, isn’t a “true” zombie game, given the antagonists, in what amounts to the 8th game in the mainline series, are of more of a vampiric persuasion this time. While that’s a valid, if slightly pedantic perspective, we’re certain that any Resi or zombie fan will get a kick out of this staggeringly creepy and atmospheric adventure.
Smartphone
Smartphones used to be the underdog in the games industry, but no longer. In Canada, for example, those surveyed on their gaming preferences said smartphones were their preferred gaming device. This is perhaps unsurprising, with free spins in Canada among the best ways to play casino games at no risk, and a host of “freemium” titles available in the app store letting gamers plug and play, casual gaming has never been easier. Comparison portals such as VegasSlotsOnline has a wide variety of games, bonuses and the security needed when playing these types of games. Understandably then, there are a few solid zombie games to explore for mobile. One great example, and a clear homage to The Walking Dead, is Into the Dead 2. It features graphics that punch well above their weight, and serves up a satisfying “DayZ-esque” zombie survival experience right to your smartphone.
PlayStation
Dying Light 2 is the long awaited sequel to what many consider, not unjustifiably, to be the greatest depiction of zombie-survival gameplay ever devised. One critical innovation the original game brought in was to bring the action into the first person realm. But don’t think that means you’ll be tearing down hordes of the undead with a range of increasingly destructive guns. In Dying Light 2, as in its predecessor, you’re normally struggling to find a crowbar, let alone anything that takes bullets. This tilts the gameplay massively towards vulnerability, and makes approaching zombies a truly unnerving prospect.
PC
In terms of zombie titles there are many worth your attention for the PC. Perhaps the best known, and most prestigious, is DayZ. Originally a mod of the FPS title ARMA 2, DayZ became increasingly popular among the PC community for its ability to realistically depict the challenges of navigating a post-zombie apocalypse world. From securing rations, to evading zombies and battling other scavenging players, the level of immersion DayZ provides is unparalleled.
Nintendo Switch
The Switch is a compelling and dynamic console that does a great job of encouraging indie developers, meaning it’s a home to many creative and novel gameplay experiences you won’t find anywhere else. One such example of this is the zombie-horde puzzler – I, Zombie. In this title the tables are turned and you take charge of a growing mass of brain-hungry undead to wipe out humanity. Through a series of increasingly taxing and tricky puzzles, you’re tasked with using a compelling, and surprisingly deep, set of squad based tactical mechanics in order to get your stumbling mass of zombies to overwhelm the diverse human defenses in place to stop you.
