Single Slam – We Do Not Resist by Orphaned Land (Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs)

Israeli folk, power, progressive metal pioneers Orphaned Land have released a new single called We Do Not Resist.  We Do Not Resist is taken from their upcoming album called Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs. The new album is due to be released on January 26th via Century Media Records.

Unsung Prophets & Dead Messiahs will be the band’s 6th full length studio release and follows on from 2013’s All is One. You can read our thoughts on that album here. They have also released a whole host of other music in different formats. A demo, a couple EP’s, a couple split albums and a Live album, specifically.

Orphaned Land formed back in 1991 and two of the original members are still in the band. They are frontman and lead vocalist Kobi Farhi and bassist, Uri Zelcha. Joining them, on the drums, we have Matan Shmuely and on guitars and the bouzouki is Idan Amsalem. Last but not least, and bringing a lot of the folk instrument skills is Chen Balbus. Chen is also on guitars but also plays a host of other instruments such as the piano, the bouzouki, Saz, Oud, xylophone and adds backing vocals.

Resist

On to the single and We Do Not Resist is just under 3 and a half minutes long. It is a quick and catchy song, utilising tons of oriental folk elements. Intricate and infectious melody, loads of backing and a fast, tribal drum beat blend beautifully together. The vocals are delivered with a snarl, apart from the occasional clean line mainly in the backing vocals. Lyrically, We Do Not Resist tackles the sheep like culture of modern man as we blindly follow our “leaders” either political, cultural or other. Things like censorship are covered cleverly with the use of “beeping out” words in the track while war, poverty, fake news and gluttony are all covered while reminding us that “We Do Not Resist”.

It is a really catchy, really clever and really poignant track. The melody gets stuck in your head, as does the message. Great job.

Lead singer and front man Kobi Farhi had the following to say about the new track: “After our first single Like Orpheus, it is time to present you the angry side of our new album. Growls, straight forward protest text against the fact that we do not resist. I won’t say too much, listen to it, read the lyrics. It’s a kick into your face.”

Owner/Editor/Writer/YouTuber - Heavy Metal and reading, two things I have always loved so they are the two areas you will find most of my reviews. Post apocalyptic is my jam and I always have a book on the go and have for decades now. From a metal perspective, age has softened my inadequacies and I now operate with an open mind, loving many bands from many sub genres but having a particular admiration for the UK underground scene. In my other time, when not focused on Dad duties and work, I try to support the craft beer movement by drinking as much of it as I can and you will also find me out on the streets, walking. I love walking, I love exploring new places and snapping nature photos as I go.
