Single Slam: The Hope Burden – Abandonment // I Want To Be Well (Self Released)

Back with their first new music since April 2020, Oxfordshire atmospheric post-metal band, The Hope Burden will release a new double-single called Abandonment // I Want to Be Well. The new release also includes a remastered version of April 2020’s single, Lamentation. It will be available on March 25th, 2022.

The Hope Burden have never failed to startle and amaze with what they’ve produced to date and once again, they show they are one of the brightest slices of beautiful misery that exists in the UK with this new release.

The first track is Abandonment and begins with earnest guitar melody that immediately goes straight for the emotions. Just as you’re beginning to get used to this, it kicks up a gear and the band unleash their heavy, more brutalising side. Fast and intense, it’s thrilling and then the atmospheric post that the band do so well begins to seep in and take over, leading to a drop and lead-in to a chorus that is simply phenomenal. This might very well be the most affecting track The Hope Burden have ever created and certainly up there as one of their best.

Can they make it two for two? Of course, they bloody can. I Want to Be Well’s earnest but cold post-melody introduction will send a shiver down the spine. The building rhythm, the drums getting a little more intense and the arrival of the vocals shifts things slightly before The Hope Burden dig into their darker and more black-orientated side for some of their heaviest sounding music so far.

The cherry on top? A remastered version of the stunning previous single Lamentation. If you want more detail, you can read our review of that track here. What can be said here is that it’s another absolute stunner of a track and this remaster gives it fresh life.

Fans that have been following along will find themselves at home here but, and this is really important, it’s clear that they have progressed as musicians. These tracks, the two new ones and the remastered version of Lamentation have the potency and poignancy of a band with 3 or 4 albums under their belt.
