Single Slam – Shape of You by Our Hollow Our Home (Ed Sheeran Cover)

Southampton based metalcore/metal band Our Hollow Our Home have dropped a new single. That single, Shape of You, was a bit of a surprise. Not only because I wasn’t expecting anything but also because it is a cover song. Shape of You was originally released by Ed Sheeran earlier this year.

It is hardly the first time a metal band has chosen to delve into the pop world to push out a cover. To be fair to Ed Sheeran, as a singer/songwriter he is a talented man. He has a great career story and has worked his way to the top of his music genre. Despite me thinking his music mostly sucks, he is one of very few musicians in the genre I actually have some respect for. Just a little, but some nonetheless.

Shape of you

Considering metal has gone as far as covering Frozen’s Let It Go (Betraying the Martyrs), Britney Spears’ Oops I Did It Again (Children of Bodom) and even Mel C of the Spice Girls,  I Turn To You (Darkseed), covering Ed Sheeran is pretty standard. I mean he writes music and plays a guitar so at least he has something in common with us.

Despite my little nod to Ed Sheeran, I had to check out the original before listening to the cover. It is pretty bad. These pop singer/songwriters pull off a ballad pretty well. This song tries to be more upbeat and it doesn’t suit.

I think it is very charitable of heavy metal bands like Our Hollow Our Home taking these pop songs and improving them. The Shape of You is a poor pop song which is given a boost of power and energy by these talented Brits.

It is a cover, and so it struggles at points as the band are tied to a preset song structure. Still, if you like Ed Sheeran, you will get a kick out of this. If you don’t, this comes over as a good metalcore song . You wouldn’t necessarily know it was a cover without looking into it. Heavy verses are followed by clean choruses and breakdowns galore. It’s pretty cool and heavy as you like.

Does The Shape of You add anything to the band, releasing this track after the impressive debut Hartsick? Nope, not at all. It’s a decent track though, and a bit of fun. so why not check it out here?
