Single Slam – I Am Broken Too by Killswitch Engage (Atonement)
Killswitch Engage have released the second single from their incoming new album, Atonement. This one is called I Am Broken Too.
Atonement is set for release on the 16th of August via Music for Nations. It’s the follow up album to their popular 2016 release Incarnate. Interestingly Atonement also features a few guest musicians. One of those is none other than original Killswitch Engage vocalist, Howard Jones. Chuck Billy, from Testament, also features on Atonement. Killswitch Engage have already released one song from this new album. That was called Unleashed and you can read the full review of it here.
Killswitch Engage are Jesse Leach on vocals with Justin Foley on drums. Guitars are with both Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz while Mike D’Antonio is on the bass.
I Am Broken Too is a short song, at just over 2 and a half minutes long. It is a really good song. Really emotive and personal. It tackles the all too familiar topic of mental health. Something frontman Jesse Leach has openly spoken about in relation to his own struggles. There is a nice chugging riff running through the song with some passionate lead guitar work. Vocals are strong and full of emotion as you would expect. The chorus is nice and catchy and I like the introduction of the heavier growled words in the second verse. It works well in a cleanly sung song and adds a bit of extra feeling. There is a cracking chugging section nearing the end with some heavy backing vocals added for another layer.
I Am Broken Too is a good song. With the topic, it isn’t very heavy musically but is plenty heavy from a lyrical and feeling perspective. I would like a little more leads guitar and a little more growl but with a topic like this, it is hard to complain. They sound like they mean it. They do mean it and they do the subject matter justice. Hopefully providing some words of comfort or understanding for a few listeners that will be touched by this on a deeper level.
Jesse Leach said, of I Am Broken Too:
“This song is very near and dear to my heart. I wanted the listener to feel the urgency, the heaviness of the topic as well as a possible connection. Many people suffer from mental illness in one form or another. I want nothing more than for people to feel like they are not alone in this struggle. There is always someone there to help, to listen, and to be there for you. Don’t lose hope and don’t let your brokenness consume you. Broken can be fixed, or at the very least, maintained. No one is alone in this fight.”
