Live Review: Resolve, Cane Hill, Acres and Half Me at The Underworld (04/05/2024)
Starting off my bank holiday weekend correctly by going to see some bloody good riffs and have some beverages courtesy of Camden’s Underworld.
Half Me waste no time in splitting the crowd in half with ferocious riffs and huge breakdowns with sub drops that I can feel in my chest. My ribs wobble and shake with each bass string slapped and I’m genuinely very pleased with their performance. Given their 30 minute set I think they left that crowd hungry for more.
For second dinner, Acres are stepping up to the plate, and they bring the BEANS. And not the baked kind – Acres waste no time in sending shockwaves through the venue with their own genre blend of metal core and electronica. The crowd, met with the request of ‘open this fucking place up’ waste no time in sending bodies flying across the venue in angles and directions I wasn’t aware existed previously. It’s mixed wonderfully and they are effortlessly strong.
Every member is bringing something to the table and they’re genuinely fun and interesting to watch. Also they get a +1 from me because their bassist was wearing a Power Trip shirt.
It’s not all heavy and gross – they’ve got some absolutely fantastic melody behind those sub drops. Their vocalist sings beautifully and it’s very well balanced between their bassists’ raspy screams. Next time Acres are in London it’s safe to say I’ll be showing up a little more well versed with their discography. Also big up whoever does their merch – the designs were sick.
Cane Hill are up next all the way from Louisiana – bringing their spiced blend of pissed-breakdown-ride cymbal-eating dirt-hardcore-core? Simply put Cane Hill are heavy as fuck. Limbs are flying left and right in that pit and I won’t lie – it calls to me. As I am currently writing I am deeply fighting off the urge to go and throw down. If their review is shorter it’s because they forced me into going into the pit with their entrancing 1’s and 0’s.
They fill the room with red and just don’t stop. Each chug feels like another jab to the skull and 2nd song in I’m feeling the punches. At no point does this energy stop, the floaty riffs and fat ass breakdowns are endless and I’m not complaining.
Up next are Resolve from across the channel – bringing their own metalcore sauce. As seems to be the theme tonight they waste absolutely no time in getting into the nitty gritty of low tuned chuggy noise and guttural screams from their beast of a frontman. Don’t get this band wrong at all though – if melody and big bright riffs are more your thing they’ve got plenty of that here too. They’re genre bending in the best way possible, and it’s immediately clear upon their arrival to the stage that they have earned this headline spot. Every band so far has absolutely killed it and Resolve make no exception. The Underworld was the perfect choice for this lineup, and I can’t stress enough that the crowd were putting the space to the test here. That super annoying pillar? It’s part of the pit.
Between massive choruses and their bassist going absolutely insane on stage Resolve have easily solidified everything that’s been said about them leading up to this tour. This band are a treat to watch and are absolutely worth seeing if you can catch them on this tour, even if you personally would decide to go for the other bands, stick around and watch them.
Buy tickets to see this tour, even if you don’t like every band on the bill each one has something different to offer and eventually you’re gonna hear a riff that makes you frown with your chin and that’s something that we can all surely agree on, right?
