Raptures Lost’s Top 10 Favorite Co-op Games (Xbox 360)

Cooperative gameplay (often abbreviated as co-op) is a feature in video games that allows players to work together as teammates against one or more AI opponents. It is distinct from other multiplayer modes, such as competitive multiplayer modes like player versus player or deathmatch. Playing simultaneously allows players to assist one another in many ways: passing weapons or items, healing, providing covering fire in a firefight, and performing cooperative manoeuvres such as boosting a teammate up and over obstacles.

I’ve played my fair share of cooperative games over the years. Some of my earliest memories of co-op gaming take me back to playing Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Mega drive (Genesis) or playing Battletoads on SNES. These are examples of games in which cooperative play was integrated well but that isn’t always the case.

This is my top 10 favorite co-op games on the Xbox 360 as played by myself (Raptures Lost) and Fleshmechanic. This is based on the cooperative games that I’ve actually played, I’m not saying these are the best co-op games out there but these are the ones that I had most fun with.

Number 10 – Lego Harry Potter 5-7 Years (Lego games)

Lego games are always great fun; wanna know what makes them even more fun? Playing them with a co-op partner! It always adds to the enjoyment when the Lego game is based on something you and your partner like and this was the case with Lego Harry Potter 5-7 years. You get to play as two different characters and use their unique abilities to complete tasks, gain collectibles and so on.

Number 09 – Trine 2

Trine_2_-_Searock_Castle_Octopus

Trine 2 is a side scrolling game of action, puzzles and platforming. You play as one of the Three Heroes and your cooperative partner plays as another as they make their way through dangers untold in a fantastical fairy-tale world.

Number 08 – Saints Row IV

Saints-Row-4-DubStep-Gun

In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. What better way to save the saints and free humanity from the grips of Zinyak than with another person? What’s better than a dub-step gun? Well how about two dub-step guns!

Number 07 – Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition!

guacamelee-3

Guacamelee! is a Metroid-vania style action-platformer set in a magical Mexican inspired world. The game draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore, and features many interesting and unique characters.

Number 06 – Red Dead Redemption – Outlaws to the end co-op mission pack

If you’ve played the Red Dead Redemption online multiplayer then you know how much fun it can be. Outlaws to the end adds 6 cooperative missions that can be completed online with a partner and it lead to one of the most hilarious online experiences I’ve ever had. Basically there is a mission where you have to deliver a carriage to a certain location without it getting destroyed or without you and your partner dying. Me and Fleshmechanic were attempting this on the hardest difficulty for an achievement and we kept failing because one of us had to drive while the other attempted to keep the heat off the carriage from attacking enemies. Eventually, a random joined the session without a headset and took the reins of the carriage without any instruction and drove us to victory by a very small margin. I don’t know who that was and I never got to thank them but they’re a damn hero.

Number 05 – Portal 2

Players take the form of two robot test subjects built by GLaDOS, Atlas; the short and round blue bot, P-body; the tall and pea-shaped orange bot that looks like a turret with arms and legs. Each bot comes equipped with their own Handheld Portal Device with separate portal colors. The portals are capable of maintaining the flow of things, even if it enters a partner’s portal, which is essential during some test chambers.

This is one of those cooperative experiences that requires a lot of communication and understanding especially during the early test chambers.

Number 04 – Serious Sam (The First Encounter)

Serious Sam: The First Encounter takes place in Ancient Egypt and features large-scale battles against many enemies. Serious Sam is at its best with a co-op partner with your backs against a wall as an insane amount of enemies descend upon you both.

Number 03 – Deathspank

Deathspank Screen

DeathSpank takes players on a ride through the countryside, visiting various towns, and becoming a hero to many downtrodden folks along the way. DeathSpank is that hero, and he brings his silent little sidekick Sparkles along on side quests around a main storyline that will have you rolling with every bit of quirky banter.

Number 02 – Dead Island –

Dead Island is the closest thing to date to an open world co-op action RPG. As an added bonus, it has zombies. There’s plenty of content here as well with lots of side quests to keep you and your partner occupied.

Number 01 – Rayman Legends

Rayman-LegendsGC

Rayman Legends supports up to four players locally with each player being able to select from the many colorful variations of Rayman, friend Globox, Teensies, and the Princesses (ladies in viking helmets wielding battle axes)

So there you have it, that’s my top 10 favourite cooperative games on Xbox 360. Do you have any games that you recommend we give a try?
