My Favourite Video Game: Ventures

My Favourite Video Game is a guest feature from bands and artists where we set them a simple task… tell us about your favourite video game. In this feature, Ollie May, vocalist of metalcore band Ventures, accepts the challenge.

They have just announced a UK tour with Virtue In Vain to take place at the end of October 2024.

My favourite game of all time would have been Halo, but in hindsight the game that left a lasting impression on me was Grandia. A game that came out on PlayStation 1.

I picked it up when I lived in Germany I had a choice between Ape Escape and that. At the time I was playing Future Cop L.A.P.D and stuff so it was a big change in genre for me. I was a proper kid when I futilely tried to play it, but as I grew up and the more I understood the game the further I got through it.

This game truly ruined Final Fantasy for me though because I preferred its combat system which had a bit more positional options and ways to evade. I also really liked the pixel on 3D art; which wasn’t hugely unique at the time but still looked great.

It was a massive game as well it had 2 discs, it took me around a year to finally get to the second disk. It was my childhood challenge!

The story, because I was a kid, felt relatable and the romance is so innocent in it, it was just a magic game for me all in all. Which when I finally finished made finishing it that much sweeter. The biggest winner of Grandia though is the soundtrack! Every time that title screen comes up it blasts me straight back to me, my bowl of golden nuggets and my PS1 when life was simple and innocent.
