It’s very difficult to pick just one video game to consider my favorite, because throughout all my years playing video games on a variety of different consoles, there have been many that have given me untold hours of enjoyment.

But if I had to choose just one, it would probably be the original Double Dragon, on the original Nintendo system. I was a huge fan of Double Dragon as an arcade game, so when I ended up getting it for the NES as a kid I immediately dove in and spent hours playing it. Although the younger generation would look at the graphics and gameplay and consider it primitive by today’s standard, at the time it was badass. What other game at the time had an opening scene showing a woman being punched in the stomach and kidnapped !?! That was considered very risky when it first came out and had parents everywhere fearing that it would lead to their children wanting to join a street fighting gang.

As an honourable mention, I have to say NHL ’94 on the Sega Genesis was also a game that I obsessed over. I remember spending hours upon hours playing that game and trying to help the hapless Hartford Whalers win the Stanley Cup. It was so fun in its simplicity and I still think it has the most entertaining fight engine of all the hockey games before or since. Maybe not the best, but certainly the most entertaining.
