Interview: Tomi Perrakoski (Written)
Tomi Perrakoski is a prolific artist with several major metal bands under his belt, as well as his solo project. In this interview we get to know him a little better.
1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
Hey Its my pleasure! I am From Turku, Finland and I have always be music fanatic, i started listening Metal music as i was like 8-9 years old with bands like Kiss, Wasp, Iron Maiden, Anthrax and later Metallica, Testament, Kreator, Napalm Death, Death Angel, etc. It was kind of dream come to to came to music business, you just have to be brave and trust on what you do. I have 3 Bands (Magnadur, Morbid Children and Houruva) and this Solo project, I also go gym (former Powerlifting European champion) and hiking (38 National parks in Finland under my belt).
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?
It’s Melodic Death metal/djent/avant-garde with genre breaking elements of many music genres.
3. What’s currently keeping you busy? A new album/EP/single release? A new video? Playing live, or planning ahead?
All of these 4 music projects and new songs from them and Albums to come(new albums coming this year from Magnadur, this solo project, Morbid Children and later also From Houruva) they keep me very busy and also all the time making new music videos and my Metal madness weekly podcast also keeps me very busy and my music curator works.
4. What is about this current period that is particularly exciting for you?
Upcoming songs and albums that come soon out, I have made so many cool songs I hope many people will find them and listen them to see my true art.
5. Tell me about the work that has gone into making it a reality and what it means to you.
I have done soon 2 years 24/7 to make my dreams come thru, and still got lot to do.
6. Making music and being creative can be a very positive experience and can be very good for the mind. In what way has making music had a positive impact on your mental health?
It has very strong impact of me keeping all together, you get so many feelings ans vibes from making music and listening music that it means so much to me!
7. It can also be incredibly challenging, more so in the modern times. What have been some challenging aspects of making music and how have you overcome them?
At the start was hard to find musicians to my projects and connections, but really if you give your time and effort 110% you can go to the limits and beyond, you just have to believe in your self and just push and break the barriers.
8. How do you handle the online aspects of being in a band? Having to put out content constantly, promoting across several different social media platforms, and having your success measured in likes and follows?
Sometimes its hard and takes time especially as I have 4 Bands/projects so you got lot to do, but its just very important things that you have to do to reach wider audience!
9. How do you make this part of things enjoyable, and fulfilling, for yourself?
After you see a new song or video that you have done and its on streaming platforms it gives me the satisfaction and also when people like and say nice things from your music. Also I love making music very much!
10. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support you?
Just that they listen my music and perhaps share the links, thats very important also.
11. Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?
Gym, hiking, I am also movie and tv-series fanatic and I love also NHL and watch the games on daily bases.
