Interview: One Fall (Written)
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life bring you an interview with melodic punk and hardcore band, One Fall.
1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
Hey, thanks so much for having us! I’m Helen from ONE FALL – the rest of the gang is Caleb (drums), Phill (guitar), and Darren (bass). We’re out of Salem, Massachusetts. Phill and Caleb and I have known each other for many years, both from the music scene and the video game industry (our day jobs). Darren is new to our crew, but he’s a delight.
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?
Melodic punk/hardcore. It’s riffy and has fast beats and technical shreddy bits but with big, anthemic vocals.
3. What’s currently going on in your camp? New releases? Tours? Etc.
We’ve just put our a new 5-song EP called “Spine First!” and we are really psyched to have those tracks out in the world. We’re planning our tour dates for 2024, but we’ll for sure get down to Puerto Rico/the Dominican Republic as well as the UK/Europe later in the year.
4. What has been the most positive experience of making music to date for you?
Getting to share stages with some of our favorite bands like the Iron Roses and Belvedere has been incredible. And we absolutely love playing festivals so we can meet new people and hopefully surprise them. We’re really having such a blast and we get along super well.
5. Likewise, what has been some of the more challenging aspects and how have you overcome them?
Having day jobs is a real bummer, haha. Mostly it’s just finding what other aspects of your life you can give up in order to have time to play in a band and give it the energy it requires. But who needs showers, am I right?
6. How do you handle the modern expectations of being in a band? Always online, having to put out content constantly, your success measured in likes and follows?
I’ll be honest, I’m so bad at social media. I’m sort of a private individual, I’m definitely not someone who is posting about their meals or when they’re feeling sad. So it’s an odd shift to have to be promoting yourself and your band all the time. Having said that, we have met so many cool and interesting people through online channels, and have gotten really cool, unexpected opportunities from some of the connections we’ve made – so there is a big upside!
7. What’s something that really ‘grinds your gears’ about the industry/business these days and what would you propose is done to combat it?
I love that some folks are more interested in diverse lineups and a variety of representation these days – having said that, “female-fronted” is not a genre. I’m looking forward to seeing shows and festivals with more diversity where the focus is on a band’s genre and style. Pouzza Fest really impressed us in that regard, such an incredibly diverse lineup and bands were playing alongside their stylistic cohorts – I think their partnership with Les Insoumises was helpful in that regard.
8. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support your music?
We really appreciate anyone who is listening to our music – thank you! These days, it helps bands get opportunities to be streamed, liked, and saved to playlists on Spotify. On the other hand, it helps us afford to tour when you buy our merch (in person or via Bandcamp). Either one is a big help, but at the end of the day, we just appreciate that you’re listening.
9. Outside of the music, what’s do you do to relax?
We watch a lot of pro wrestling. Also we eat a lot. Helen likes to run… in order to be able to eat more.
10. Where can people find you?
You can connect with us on Instagram and you can stream our music wherever!
