Interview: Modern Evils (Written)

Brit newcomers, Modern Evils, continue their surge with the release of their electrifying new single and video, ‘Gitzlaff Lover’, out now. In this interview we get to know them a little better.

1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.

We are a 5 piece rock band hailing from Swindon, UK. We have Aaron on vocals, Sam Rose on guitar, Meg Truscott on drums, Jake Dodwell on bass and Joe Palmer on guitar and vocals. We started becuase Meg was bored of drumming along to Aaron’s old hip-hop project. We then decided to form Modern Evils.

2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?

Post-hardcore, with a bit of everything else and a bit of something for everyone.

3. What’s currently keeping you busy? A new album/EP/single release? A new video? Playing live, or planning ahead?

We are in the process of writing a lot of new music, mostly singles as we are still discovering who we are even after 4/5 years. We have a tour to celebrate the release of the GITZLAFF alongside a video at the same time.

4. What is about this current period that is particularly exciting for you?

The most exciting part about any release is the build up, dropping teasers here and there. We have a few more things up our sleeve to come pre and post release day.

5. Tell me about the work that has gone into making it a reality and what it means to you.

A lot of work has gone into the making and release of the song. Special thanks to Claire at Western Audio, Kane Butler of LoveletterUK and Jake Packer of Heriot for the recording, mixing and mastering of this single. It means a lot to us seeing people come together to make our vision a reality.

6. Making music and being creative can be a very positive experience and can be very good for the mind. In what way has making music had a positive impact on your mental health?

We always find that we write our best music when one of us is going through something. Having a platform to express this emotion helps us with dealing with our own mental health and we hope it can help others in the process.

7. It can also be incredibly challenging, more so in the modern times. What have been some challenging aspects of making music and how have you overcome them?

The most difficult part is holding down a 9-5/day job. We’d love the freedom to do this all of the time, but our responsibilities won’t allow it. Other than that, Joe is late quite a lot and that’s it really.

8. How do you handle the online aspects of being in a band? Having to put out content constantly, promoting across several different social media platforms, and having your success measured in likes and follows?

We try to keep the content as regular as possible especially when it comes to releases. We like to switch our merch up as regular as possible. Keeping engaged with our fans is very important to us and we really want to show them that.

9. How do you make this part of things enjoyable, and fulfilling, for yourself?

Just have fun with it all. We are here to have a good time and share our art with people, what is better than that?

10. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support you?

Just keep sharing our music with their friends. It means a lot when people randomly come to a show, just through word of mouth.

11. Outside of music, what do you like to do to relax?

Hanging out with the homies, video games, skating. Meg collects tree bark which is cool.

12. Where can people find you?

At the Victoria in Swindon. Other than that all socials are Modern Evils. We also have a website here.
