Interview: Maverick (Written)
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life bring you an interview with hard rocking punk band, Maverick.
1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
Of course! Always a pleasure!
I’ve (Eddie) officially started bringing in people on the project in 2017. As life works in mysterious ways, in late 2019, I had to continue the journey on my own, until I met Fil and Elliott. We met this year (2023) at the jam space we share. We hit it off from the start and Maverick was up and running again, ready for live appearances.
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?
Punk Rawk. Although it’s quite hard, and frankly not of our desire, to label us with a particular style. One thing’s for sure, we play punk. So people can add whatever fits their description the best, we’re cool with that.
3. What’s currently going on in your camp? New releases? Tours? Etc.
Right now, we’re focused on the upcoming shows. We’re planning to head back in the studio to record a split EP with a local band and an EP of our own. Tourwise, nothing’s planned quite yet, but we’re always on the lookout for such an occasion.
4. What has been the most positive experience of making music to date for you?
The feeling, of course. For some, happiness is found in climbing mountains, raising a family, bowling, cooking… For us, it’s music. This is home. Whether it’s jamming, recording or playing live, we’re always having a good time, as we do what we love.
5. Likewise, what has been some of the more challenging aspects and how have you overcome them?
Darker times are when no one’s cheering for you and somehow, you have to find the strength to do so on your own and keep going. Through perseverance and out of passion is how we overcome. There’s no real other option anyways. Try to find what’s wrong and we fix it. If we can’t fix an issue alone, we search for the appropriate help. Small steps towards improvement, everyday.
6. How do you handle the modern expectations of being in a band? Always online, having to put out content constantly, your success measured in likes and follows?
Yes, we understand that likes and follows is the name of the game nowadays. What can we do but adapt to our times? It’s fine. As we love what we do, it helps make the lesser fun things ok. We don’t stress over it though.
7. What’s something that really ‘grinds your gears’ about the industry/business these days and what would you propose is done to combat it?
Ticket Master. They’ve been fucking ruining it from the start. Greed is spoiling the Art, and we mean that in all types, on every platforms. We understand that for the venues, it’s convenient to have someone else take care of the sales… but really at what cost? Simply allow people to come by and buy the tickets, in person, over the phone or online.
Also, social awareness around live shows (Art in general) is lacking. People are too quick to complain about noises and small venues who are trying to make it happen just often don’t receive the fair support.
8. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support your music?
Support your local scene. Go see the shows, even if you don’t know the bands, just try and see. You might have a good time. This will ripple to everyone. As for us directly, if you wish to show some love, you can go on our linktree (linktr.ee/maverick_punx) and subscribe/follow every link in there. Give a few spins to your favourite songs, and as usual, like, share and comment.
These small gestures impact us tremendously, and they’re all free!
9. Outside of the music, what’s do you do to relax?
We love to watch movies, go to live shows and just soak in it, skate, cook, sports, good conversations with fine people… you know, regular Joe’s stuff.
10. Where can people find you?
This is our linktree, which can be found on our instagram (maverick_punx) and facebook (Maverick MTL Band) bio.
