Interview: (EEF) Early Ettringite Formation (Written)

Early Ettringite Formation or EEF are an Italian quintet who play funky and bluesy rock. Their sophomore album, ‘what eef?’, is out now and in this interview we get to know them a little better.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.

The group was born from Mattia Leoni and Umberto Ferretti with the idea of writing funk rock songs. they then recruited us to perform the songs, it was decided to form the band and we recorded a first album with a female voice with which we did live shows and competitions throughout Italy. In the new album Edoardo Gili has become our main voice and has edited many of the song lyrics over the years, drawing on increasingly disparate sounds.

Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?

I think that our approach is Rock with various influences which then draw from various styles that vary from song to song.

What’s currently going on in your camp? New releases? Tours? Etc.

There are a lot of things happening, our new album “what eef?” has just been released. and we are promoting it in Italy with various live shows, while we are already working on new songs and are planning an international tour.

What has been the most positive experience of making music to date for you?

With Eef it’s always a great experience to make music together that lights up our enthusiasm, this is also possible because we are friends and we like to mess around together.

Likewise, what has been some of the more challenging aspects and how have you overcome them?

The most challenging aspects are certainly maintaining a firm focus on our objectives and trying to maintain a certain dynamic musical activity.

How do you handle the modern expectations of being in a band? Always online, having to put out content constantly, your success measured in likes and follows?

Certainly the part on social media and the management of followers has an impact, but for us it is only a means to make what we do more known and to share it, we don’t want to give in to the neurosis of publishing content to stay within the standards of social networks, we prefer to invest our time into more creative pursuits.

What’s something that really ‘grinds your gears’ about the industry/business these days and what would you propose is done to combat it?

What makes the recording industry go round is to leverage people’s addiction to certain sound facts, “smoking” the same music is immediately satisfying. The change lies in the musicians, not in the listeners, if musicians have the courage not to give in to sonic habits something will happen.

Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask them to do to help support your music?

If you like our music, pass it around among your friends and maybe if we play near you, come and hear us live, they are two different experiences.

Outside of the music, what’s do you do to relax?

To relax, we all do different things, those who love the mountains, those who love being with their partner, those who love yoga, those who love art.
