Interview: Blanket Hill (Written)
Straight out of Luxembourg, Blanket Hill is a hardcore band who recently released their new album, ‘The Ash That Shall Remain’. In this interview we get to know them a little better.
1. Hello! Thank you for taking the time to chat to us. First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got started.
Hi, my name is David and I sing for Blanket Hill. We started in 2015. We’re from Luxembourg which is an incredibly small country so at first it was difficult to get the right people together for a band like this. We just wanted to start a hardcore band, play shows and talk about things that are important to us. Seems to be working out well so far.
2. Someone comes to you and asks you to sum up what kind of music you play – what do you tell them?
We’re a hardcore band but we also like metal and rap. There’s a lot of all that in there. We also like pit parts and big choruses. I think that explains it well haha.
3. What’s currently going on in your camp? New releases? Tours? Etc.
We’ve just put out an album called The Ash That Shall Remain and that has been received positively. We obvioulsy want to tour that record as much as possible and so far things are looking nice for 2025. We’ll be on the road a lot so keep your eyes peeled.
4. What has been the most positive experience of making music to date for you?
Probably just meeting like-minded people who care about the same things as us. We try to be politically active and take a stand against all forms of hate/fascism/sexism etc and linking with people who have the same values is great. Playing shows around the globe is great too obviously. Playing Tokyo for example is something I’ll never forget.
5. Likewise, what has been some of the more challenging aspects and how have you overcome them?
I think finding time is always a challenge when there are five people involved and everyone has a day job. I think the key is good communication and organisation. We’ve had to skip out on a few big shows but other than that we’ve always been able to do what we wanted.
6. How do you handle the modern expectations of being in a band? Always online, having to put out content constantly, your success measured in likes and follows?
It’s stressful and we don’t like it but that’s the game. I think people still care more about live shows so whenever we play somewhere we try to leave it all on stage and give people a reason to check our tracks when they’re back home. It’s not always easy but we manage.
7. What’s something that really ‘grinds your gears’ about the industry/business these days and what would you propose is done to combat it?
Pay to play shows and tours have become standard fare and it’s horrible for small bands. We’re not knocking anyone who pays to get on a tour, it’s just frustrating to watch small bands pay for a bigger band’s bus. I think if music itself made more money again, nobody would have to resort to that.
8. Speaking directly to listeners – what would you ask they do to help support your music?
We’re just happy whenever someone listens or has a good time with our music be that at a show or on streaming or with a CD. Buying a shirt always helps financially but if you care enough to just listen or be in the pit at a show, that’s already lovely.
9. Outside of the music, what’s do you do to relax?
Read, cook, watch a film. The usual. I go swimming a lot too and I follow a lot of sports as well. Always helps me relax and blow off steam haha
