Horror Short Review: You’re On Your Own, Kid (2023)
Deformed Lunchbox presents You’re on Your Own, Kid. A short horror film by Mike Matsui Jr. which stars Sophia Andrews, Heather Lynn, and Thomas Andrews.
A woman and her young daughter are playing a board game one evening at home. The child decides to ask her mother what monsters look like in real life, and the mother decides to play a prank on the child, frightening her for a moment, but ending in laughter. It’s all very wholesome.
Joke over, the young girl is sent to bed, but while being tucked in, the young girl asks to sleep with her mother, so is given a torch to shine in the darkness should she feel scared.
That night, fast asleep, a loud knock at the door and raised voices wakes her up. Torch in hand, as it all goes quiet, she goes outside her room to investigate and finds her mother crying on the floor. Monsters are real, and they’re in the house.
What follows is both thrilling, frightening, and shocking. This is an expertly made film with a clever story, great acting and terrifying visuals. It builds dread from the moment it begins, something that gets stronger and stronger as it goes on. Leading to an ending that is staggeringly good, showcasing the power of the imagination.
Monsters are real, they just come in different forms. Check it out below.
