Horror Short Review: Still (2016)
A Dark Matters original horror short, the award winning Still comes from director Carl Timms and stars Joe Capella, James Rowell and Joe Hall.
Still is a zombie horror short with its swollen tongue jammed firmly in its undead cheek. Telling the story of a street performer, a human statue, who just so happens to be mid-work when a zombie outbreak occurs around him. The only way for him to survive now is to do what he does best… stand still.
There’s staying still for the amusement of a watching crowd and then there is staying still because your life depends upon it. One is much harder than the other and Still certainly has some fun with this. Especially as the zombies can’t quite work out if the human statue is dinner or not.
The horror comes from the flesh-munching zombies that surround the human statue. This short has some impressive practical effects and plenty of gore. The comedy comes from his situation, reflections on it and narration. All of which is clever and amusing. Who won’t be cheering on wheelbarrow man as he slowly makes his break for safety?
If all of this wasn’t enough to convince you of Still’s quality, the ending is delightfully twisted. A must watch horror short, you can check it out yourself below.
