Horror Short Review: Smiling Woman 4 (2021)
The Smiling Woman series has been an entertaining series of shorts that deliver on creep factor and jump scares. However, after a great start with the first and a great follow-up, the third suggested ideas might be running out.
So it’s time for something just a little different.
Continuing the story but not having the same character from the previous entry as the new smiling woman, Smiling Woman 4 takes place at a hospital. Where a mortician (Anna Dahl) pulls back the covers of a body and we see that it is a woman (Michelle Twarowska) wearing the yellow dress of the smiling woman. As Angela goes to cut the dress off, she receives a text message. If you’ve been following along, you know what that means and to prove that point, we see the smiling woman sit up in the background.
The smiling woman has her way with her as she always does but surprisingly, the short doesn’t end here. We then meet Angela (Felissa Rose), a nurse who is working the graveyard shift. It’s her turn to be tormented by the smiling woman who is now in the body of the mortician. Anna Dahl deserves credit for having the creepiest smile since the first short.
Again, great shots and a great score enhance the creepiness but if you’ve seen the others, this isn’t doing anything fresh. It’s nice to have the story develop but we’re still not getting much in the way of development. That normally wouldn’t be a problem for a horror short but this is a series that continues on from the last and at this stage it would be nice to get some idea of who or what the smiling woman is.
