Horror Short Review: Red Yellow Blue (2023)

From writer/director Julia E. Cooke comes one of the most surreal horror shorts seen in some time. It’s Red Yellow Blue, and it is one heck of a mind-bending watch.

Starring Talya Topzand and Sydney Stirewalt, Red Yellow Blue is all about a woman’s slow descent into madness as she is tormented by a demonic figure. It’s a confusing watch, but that doesn’t harm it, as it is designed to make you feel discombobulated.

The experience of watching Red Yellow Blue is one of shock and surprise. A sensory assault of sounds and images that leave a palatable sense of dread. It’s not so far-fetched to believe that what the main character goes through, isn’t something any of us could go through. Horror that hits home, even if it is done in a such a twisted and unique way.

It’s an immersive watch, where a near twenty-minute runtime evaporates as quickly as the stability of the main character does. The visuals are so impressive, blending real-world imagery with garish other-worldly colours, and the music has a manic energy that fits the tone.

It’s very weird, but that just helps it stand out all the more. Find out more here.
