Horror Short Review: Eve Hallows – Episode 1: Halloween Hunting (2023)
Writer and director Jaye Adams presents her most ambitious work to date. A four-part horror-action series called Eve Hallows. Episode 1 – Halloween Hunting has now been released.
Starring Melissa Jackson, Ed Griggs, Joanna Hobbs, Email Convertino, Aaron Pettican, Charlie Coulson, Kelly Taylor, and with narration by Benjamin Zephaniah.
It’s Halloween and everyone is entitled to one good scare. It’s the perfect time to dress up, sit around a crackling fire, and tell spooky stories. Which is exactly what a group of friends are doing. Their fun is interrupted though when one of their number, who had gone to take a leak, screams.
Of course, they just think he is playing a prank, until he returns covered in blood and whatever attacked him, comes roaring out of the darkness.
Elsewhere, a woman leaves a party, noting that is a full moon and stops when she hears a groan coming from a dark alleyway. Going to investigate, she ends up in the hands of a vampire, one who has eyes on her neck.
Now, you might think she is an idiot for walking down a dark alley to investigate a groan late at night on her own. However, this is where the short reveals this woman is different, and her outfit is more than just a costume. This is Eve Hallows, and she is the last living member of the Hallows Family. A family that, throughout generations, have fought to protect humanity against ancient evils.
It’s all very Castlevania, isn’t it? The Hallows family certainly shares a lot in common with the Belmonts and of course, we have vampires. Yet, as the episode ends, it hints to something bigger and much more deadly.
It’s cool to see Jaye Adams branching out into more action-orientated horror here and looking to tell a bigger story. As an introduction and set-up, this is a fun start to this four-episode series, and it leaves you wanting to see where it goes next. It’s also really cool to hear mainstream music used in certain scenes too. Linkin Park’s In the End and Rory Gallagher’s Bad Penny. Which should tell you everything you need to know about the ambition of this episode and the series overall.
Let’s see what comes next, but for now, check out episode one below.
