Horror Movie Review: White Girl Apokalypse (2021)
Written and directed by Ashley Wilson, White Girl Apokalypse has a lot of promise and at times, is amusing. However, the jokes begin to wear thin and there is very little zombie horror throughout resulting in an overly tepid movie.
Originally a YouTube series of 10 short episodes, it has now been put together to make up a 75-minute feature film.
Hailey Thornton plays Kourtney, a vapid white girl playing up to every single stereotype possible. She’s self-absorbed, obsessed with Starbucks, Instagram and her looks. Anyone in her life is only there to make her own better even if she pretends that’s not the case. You know the type, the one who calls you their BFF after knowing you for a day.
So self-absorbed is she, that when the zombie apocalypse happens, she barely notices. This is funny and Thornton plays the part with gusto. It’s not that she’s particularly great but she’s really throwing her all into it.
Unfortunately, rather than have her go through the entire movie oblivious but lucking her way out of zombie-related situations, the film has Kourtney realise just what is going on. She still doesn’t take it seriously but it’s just not as much fun.
…and then the zombies just disappear from this movie. After her BFF is killed in a funny scene, Kourtney meets the nerdy Garth (Noah Artis) and decides he is her new BFF. They end up hooking up with another group of survivors who might just be more trouble than the dead outside.
Yeah, as stated at the start of this review, White Girl Apokalypse jut can’t sustain itself. Not its jokes, not its horror, not its story or tongue-in-cheek references. What started off as being amusing, such as Kourtney’s obsession with coffee and her inability to remember Garth’s name, start to grate. Even the star herself stops being as fun.
It doesn’t help that none of the other cast are able to pick up the slack, some clearly not as invested as others. By the 30-minute mark, the film has ground to a halt. You might be holding out hope that we’re going to get a ballsy, zombie-filled finale ala Night of the Living Dead but once again, White Girl Apokalypse disappoints.
You’ll want to like White Girl Apokalypse and at times, you will but like Kourtney herself, it really makes it difficult and you’ll be happier keeping your distance.
