Horror Movie Review: The World We Knew (2020)

The World We Knew is a crime horror film that was directed by Matthew Benjamin Jones & Luke Skinner, premiering at FrightFest in 2020.

The film focuses on six robbers who have fallen back to their safe house after a successful robbery that went a bit wrong. It turns out that the police appeared sooner than expected which creates suspicion amongst the group about a potential rat. Also, one of their members got killed in the ensuing shootout while another was severely wounded. Tensions are at an all-time high while they wait at the safe house for their next move. During their stay, they each must wrestle with torment as their pasts come back to haunt them.

The World We Knew is as simplistic as the above synopsis makes it sound, there’s not much else to it. Still, I did feel like there was a lot of potential for spooky things to happen but it isn’t really that kind of film unfortunately. It’s basically a bunch of characters sitting around talking back and forth, unloading their issues onto one another. The acting is superb but it’s very slow paced which would be fine if it actually built to something significant. Sadly, I didn’t feel like the slow burn was ultimately worth it.Buy Me a Coffee at ko-fi.comThis is a movie that is listed as a horror and it even premiered at FrightFest so I was expecting a bit more in terms of actual horror. This one will go down as wasted potential because it had a lot going for it. The tension it manages to generate at times is impressive and the characters had something to them but alas…..
