Horror Movie Review: Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight 2 (2021)
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight 2 (W lesie dziś nie zaśnie nikt 2) is a 2021 Polish supernatural horror slasher film and a sequel to Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight. Once again, it’s directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski.
Adam, a low-level cop with dreams of being a hero, serves as the protagonist. There aren’t many chances to prove himself in this run-down Polish town until the fateful day Zosia arrives at the jail with quite a story.
Sergeant Waldek still has doubts about the legitimacy of Zosia’s insane story, despite the amount of evidence, and decides to return to the scene of the crime with her. The meteorite that corrupted the twins as children takes Zosia as its next victim, who then gruesomely kills the sergeant.
Adam and another officer, Wanessa, arrive late to witness the aftermath. Even though Adam wishes to turn back and wait for help to arrive, they cobble together a makeshift team to track down Zosia, who has tragically turned from victim to killer.
After the team has been picked off and Wanessa betrays Adam to escape, Zosia transforms him. This turn of events changes the tone of the movie, as now Adam and Zosia follow their newfound instincts. While Zosia is fully committed to her new role, Adam has reservations about the idea that all of humanity is evil and deserves destruction.
Will Zosia get her apocalypse or will her plans be cut short? Watch and find out.
I previously reviewed the first instalment and my one major criticism there was the lack of originality. This time around that’s most assuredly not a comment I can make. Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight 2 is very unpredictable, creative and takes an interesting direction with the plot. Although the second half of the movie feels almost like its own movie, with quite a big tonal shift, I enjoyed it. Seeing it from the monster’s perspective was funny and interesting. It had me wondering if Michael Myers has the same thoughts on his own killing sprees…
Again there is incredible effects on display, with even nastier gore this time around. The acting is great, especially with most of the cast under heavy prosthetics.
Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight 2 is the definition of what a sequel should be. A solid continuation that elevates, improves and refreshes the original movie. It also ties up some loose ends here and there that bugged me in the first film.
Overall, this movie may be Poland’s second slasher film ever but it’s certainly the best one out of the two. I look forward to a possible third instalment and anymore surprising twists and turns they have left in the tank.
