Horror Movie Review: Mad Doctor of Zombie Island (2008)
If there was ever a film that didn’t deserve a sequel, it was Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island. A horror film that was originally released in 1995 as Zombie Holocaust but then later re-released in 1998 as Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island. Where its original 90-minute runtime was extended to 113-minutes.
A painful watch, Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island can rightfully be called one of the worst films ever made (read our review here). Yet, for reasons that no-one could possibly fathom, Gary Whitson wrote and directed a sequel. Called ‘Mad Doctor of Zombie Island’ or ‘Female Mercenaries 2 – Mad Doctor of Zombie Island’, it’s as bad as the first film. It’s only saving grace is that it’s shorter, but that doesn’t make it any easier to digest.
So, the story. A meteor hit Earth some time ago, and the survivors struggle to survive. At some remote location, a mad female doctor is working on building an army of clones to take over what remains of the world. All while attempting to control the few males that remain through a form of experimentation that turns them into flesh-hungry zombies.
Or something like that. It makes no sense, is told in the most confusing way, and lacks any moments of spark to grab the attention. Not only that, it acts like this is a continuation of the story from Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island, but then it just repeats that same story. It’s both baffling and frustrating.
To the surprise of literally no-one who saw Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island, Mad Doctor of Zombie Island is an awful film. It looks terrible, sounds terrible, has no characters, and has a terrible cast who are mostly just there to get half-naked. There’s micro-budget, and then there’s no money at all. Listen, if you don’t have the capabilities to make a film, don’t.
The novelty of the poor quality disappears very quickly, and all your left with is the hollow feeling of having wasted every second of your time. If, like me, you’ve seen both, then you’ve given Gary Whitson more time than he deserves. It’s enough to make you angry at him.
Mad Doctor of Zombie Island is an exceptionally hateable film, with just one thing that makes it marginally better than Female Mercenaries on Zombie Island. Which is the fact that it’s shorter. Congratulations Gary, you made a better film just by making the trash disappear off screen quicker. You must be so proud.
