Horror Movie Review: Fangs Out (2023)

A ‘no-budget’ horror-comedy, Fangs Out is as cheap as they come. Every single part of it. Directed by Dennis Devine, who shares writing credits with Drake Cola and Randy Oppenheimer, Fangs Out is not a pretty film.

We’re not just talking about its low-production values either.

Four friends (Stacy Aung, Heidi Hemlock, Brian Easter Jr. and Marlene Mc’Cohen) are heading to Mexico. It’s Spring Break, but that’s not why they are heading down South. No, they are heading across the border to get some cosmetic surgery done at the hands of Dr. Pavor (Samuel Code). A black-market plastic surgeon who isn’t charging as much as the more reputable places.

Of course, this is a really bad idea but not for the reasons most would suspect. You see this clinic has a different purpose and it’s the blood-sucking kind.

Maybe the friends will get lucky though and Detective Lee (Randy Oppenheimer) will be able to save them. He is on the trail of his missing daughter and has tracked her to the clinic.

There is no ignoring just how cheap Fangs Out is. It dominates the screen to the point of distraction. Yet, it’s just one of many problems the film faces. Problems that are evident from the very start, right up until the credits begin to roll.

The story is meh, requiring the characters to be thick as mince. This works to some degree as most of them are written as vapid tools only interested in boob jobs, penis enlargements and vaginal reconstructions. It doesn’t matter that they had to walk through the woods to find his ‘off the grid’ place or that the nurses are looking a bit pale.

This could imply that Fangs Out is self-aware and going for comedy over horror but if it is trying to be funny at any stage, it never manages to raise even a smile. The jokes are puerile at best and often delivered with unconvincing dialogue from a group of actors that aren’t going to be adding this film to their CVs anytime soon.

The cheapness extends to the location and the effects, another area that Fangs Out just feels rubbish. Which is the overriding feeling coming out the other end. It’s a rubbish movie where no amount of heart can make up for so many shortcomings.
