Horror Movie Review: Demonic Plastic Surgeon M.D. (2022)

Released in 2021, Doctor Carver aka Conjuring the Plastic Surgeon, was a solid horror flick from director Louisa Warren. Where the positives of the film did outweigh the negatives. Likable characters, a hearty attempt to tell a deeper story, good acting, and plenty of gore. It’s worth a watch (read our review here).

As with many Jagged Edge Production films, it didn’t take long for a sequel to arrive and in 2022 we got Doctor Carver 2. Also known as Conjuring the Plastic Surgeon 2 and Demonic Plastic Surgeon M.D. Directed by Louisa Warren, written by Scott Chambers, and starring Aimee Marie Higham, Sofia Lacey, Andrea Richardson, and Danielle Scott.

Acting as both a sequel, and a soft reboot, Demonic Plastic Surgeon M.D. brings back characters from the first film in baffling fashion. One being played by a new actor, another returning from the dead, and another ending up at the same place in this film even though she ran away in the last. What is this place? An old people’s home and it’s not long before the evil nurse Alexa arrives and starts offering the aging residents a chance to regain their youthful looks.

Of course, the likes of Tonya and Pepper will instantly recognise Alexa, right? They certainly think they do, but are constantly gaslit by Alexa to the point that contrary to all evidence, her sinister plans get well and truly underway. It would be beyond stupid if it wasn’t done in a way that suggests this should be taken from a more fun angle, rather than a serious angle.

Something that becomes more and more apparent as the demonic surgeon arrives and sets about torturing the residents in delightfully cheesy ways. Exactly like the first film, if you’re expecting A-grade visuals here, you’re going to come away sorely disappointed. Yet, Demonic Plastic Surgeon M.D. has a bit more creativity with what the demonic surgeon can offer and with that, comes much more effective horror elements that have a humorous slant.

This is welcome, especially as you can’t take this film seriously. It has one of the most contrived plots in modern horror, features actors that struggle to make it work, imaginative horror elements that lack strong effects, and an ending that can be called underwhelming. It really shouldn’t be a recommended watch, yet it is, as like the first film it does enough to hold the attention. It just so happens that this time round, it’s got a grip from an unexpected, but welcome, angle.
