Horror Movie Review: Camp Death III in 2D (2018)
Directed by Matt Frame, Camp Death III in 2D is a stupid, lewd, gory and hilarious send-up of slasher horror while poking fun at one of the more enjoyable Friday the 13th sequels. A horror/comedy parody of Friday the 13th Part III 3D although it takes inspiration from slasher horrors in general.
Camp Crystal Meph is to be reopened following a murderous rampage by a masked killer called Johann Van Damme. He is long dead though, right?
The new residents of the camp are soon to find out though. A wacky bunch of individuals (an understatement), they’re all here as Camp Crystal Meph is now a rehab centre for mentally ill adults. This is the dream of Head Counsellor, Todd Boogjumper (Dave Peniuk) but he struggles to keep control a lot of the time.
Alongside his Uncle Mel (Darren Andrichuk) who hilariously had the trees once talk him into suing the lake. His girlfriend, Rachel (Angela Galanopoulos) and a few others, he strives to get the camp up and running but things get even worse when the killings start anew.
Has Johann returned or is it something far more sinister?
Camp Death III in 2D is one of the silliest horror movies I’ve seen in a long time. It’s gag after gag after gag tied loosely together. Normally that wouldn’t be something that I would praise but this movie is so much fun, it really doesn’t matter that the story is so light. It tries everything possible to be as absurd as it can be and most of the time it sticks the landing.
The cast are great. Everyone looks to having a blast here, their energy and over the top performances makes for compelling watching. Then there is the abundance of gore that leans more towards the practical side of things. The blood spurts, flies and pours from the screen and it’s hard not to react with glee.
I’m made mention of the comedy aspects a few times and while I found it to be quite a funny film, its humour is certainly not going to be to everyone’s taste. Unchain your brain, Camp Death III in 2D doesn’t need deep thinking or analysis. It’s just a silly horror movie that exudes the love and care those involved had making it.
