Horror Movie Review: Bog (1979)

They don’t make movies like this anymore. Let’s all be thankful of that.

Written by Carl Kitt and directed by Don Keeslar, Bog is cheap, poorly shot, poorly acted & a chore to get through. It’s a bad horror movie that has next to no redeeming features. Even the title is stupid…it’s not a bog, it’s a lake.

A lake where dynamite fishing revives a gill monster. Once awake the hilariously bad-looking creature promptly begins killing fishermen who stumble across its lair. It’s up to the local sheriff and biologist Ginny (Gloria DeHaven) to put a stop to it!

There is little reason going deeper into the plot, Bog is an incredibly boring film that tries to pad its runtime with lengthy sub-stories about Ginny falling in love. Seriously, one kissing/looking deeply into eyes lasts for what feels like years. All while obnoxious sounding music plays. It’s one of the most memorable moments of the movie because of how stupidly long it is.

The acting is horrifying, not a single actor or actress is taking their role seriously or trying even slightly. Some scenes are almost cartoonish such as the ‘double-take’ scene that might be up there as the most embarrassing piece of acting in horror ever.

Bog 2

Then there is the ridiculous editing that makes use of freeze frames constantly even if the sequence doesn’t call for one.

If you manage to make it to the credits, you won’t feel good about that. Bog isn’t even worth a watch for laughs as it’s just too boring, taking itself way to seriously & failing to deliver on the gore front.
