Horror Movie Review: An Hour to Kill (2018)

An Hour to Kill is an anthology film that mixes two genres together, horror and crime. Written by Aaron K. Carter and Ronnie Jimenez, the former took the directing seat too.

There are three stories with a wrap around that features Frankie Pozos and Aaron Guerrero as two hitmen having to kill time. An hour to be exact so to pass the time they tell each other a few stories.

The first is called Valkyrie’s Bunker and sees five girls who are searching for a secret stash of weed and come across a bunker. One that was supposedly built by the Nazis. The girls get more then they bargained for when a killer in a gas mask starts hunting them down.

Hour 2

After a strong opening that introduces our hit-men and their boss, Mr. Kinski (Mel Novak), Valkyrie’s Bunker sees things stall and sputter to a halt. The story is pretty silly (Nazi’s in California?), most of the deaths are off-screen and the ending is disappointing.

The second story is a vast improvement though, especially for those who like being grossed out.

Called ‘Assacre’, it’s all about competitive eating and revenge meted out with the hottest chilli known to man! This story is played more for laughs and it will get the odd chuckle or two. The effects impress too considering the budgetary limitations just be prepared to feel a little sick afterwards.

Hour 3

Then we get Hog Hunters, a story about a redneck bowling team who plan to initiate a new member but meet a twisted farmer who likes his pigs a little too much. We’re talking bestiality and mutant pigs here!

The best of the trio of stories, Hog Hunters is the most accomplished with its homage to Deliverance but somehow more warped.

Hours 4

With the stories done, the hour is over and the wrap-around story closes things out in interesting fashion. It’s a well told story and the trio of shorts have varying levels of entertainment. It shines with indie gloss but a little more blood and guts would have been nice.
