Game Soundtrack Review: Flint: Treasure of Oblivion (Original Game Soundtrack)

Developed by Savage Level and published by Microïds, Flint: Treasure of Oblivion is a real-time exploration and turn-based tactical combat game combining exploration, strategy and unique visual storytelling. The game, released in November 2024 (PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and Series S, Microsoft Windows) plunges players into the heart of an adventure where pirates, mysteries and priceless treasures await.

Experience the Golden Age of Piracy through the strong and original story of what happened before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s beloved tale, Treasure Island! Prepare to embark alongside the infamous Captain Flint, his second-in-command Billy Bones and his crew of old salts in search of a legendary treasure promising freedom and fortune.

Such an epic game needs a suitably epic soundtrack, one that captures the pirate life in all its swashbuckling glory. Which is where Winifred Phillips comes in. The Grammy winning composer, whose credits include titles in eight of the most popular franchises in gaming: Assassin’s Creed, God of War, Jurassic World, Lineage, LittleBigPlanet, The Sims, Total War, and Wizardry, created the Flint: Treasure of Oblivion soundtrack.

There is no denying that Phillips is immensely talented and able to elevate a game with her soundtracks, but it’s a special kind of soundtrack that can make a game better by simply existing. That is the case here, as Flint: Treasure of Oblivion was just an alright game that never quite managed to live up to its promise, but with this outstanding soundtrack, it leaves a stronger impression.

A major component of why that is the case is because Phillips doesn’t just focus on the ‘yo-ho shanty’ side of pirating. Instead, what we have are more elaborate and adventurous pieces, almost always bombastic, and filled with symphonic and cinematic life. At times, the heart will race. At others, the mind will run wild with the imagery of lost worlds, dark depths, and unfathomable mysteries.

This, and so much more, is what Winifred Phillips manages to capture perfectly. All while embracing the ‘yo-ho shanty’ side of things too. As extravagant as the soundtrack is, there are inherent pirate themes throughout. Charming and inventive, you will be caught up in the atmosphere of the game all because of its stellar soundtrack.
