Game Review: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (Mobile – Free to Play)

Released to tie into the movie of the same name in 2015. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is a free to play game by Paramount Digital Entertainment.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse – The Game

A puzzle game that utilises the skill based point-and-shoot mechanic. It requires you to hit all the zombies in the level in as few shots as possible from a fixed point. Gameplay is as simple as that, use your finger to aim & release to shoot a bullet!

Scouts Game 3

The games reward comes from lining up perfect shots & figuring out ricochet patterns. That it slows down & zooms in to show your final kill is an added nice touch.

There are a total of three stars to earn per level & they are used to unlock new areas, five in total & each from the film. There are 20 levels in each area with tougher zombies & more puzzling environments as you progress.

Scouts Game 2

The game also mixes things up by giving you different ammo types & before you shoot you can see just what your next shot is going to be.  It’s just a few more tactical options. Perhaps their are a few zombies lined up on different platforms? The shotgun spread should take care of them nicely.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is a surprisingly addictive & fun little game but greed manages to spoil the goodwill built up. This isn’t a free to play game that’s used as a clever promotional tactic to get people interested in the movie.

Scouts Game 5

No, it’s a free to play cash grab based around scrap. This stuff can be picked up in-game but it’s such a paltry amount it’s pointless. A crate will give you the whopping amount of 1 piece of scrap. To put that in perspective after 22 levels I had picked up 3 pieces of scrap. All the powerups cost 500 scrap & they are one use only…of course. The boosters vary in price with extra ammo costing 100 pieces of scrap while the most expensive costs 4000 pieces.

You can pay 99p for 1000 pieces of scrap with it increasing until it reaches £3.99 for 20,000 pieces of scrap. They are utterly pointless in-app purchases & a disappointing show of greed in a game that is kind of fun.
