Game Review: My Friend Pedro (Xbox One X)
My Friend Pedro is a shoot ’em up video game developed by DeadToast Entertainment and published by Devolver Digital.
Your friend is Pedro. Pedro is a floating, sentient banana. Pedro wants to you to kill everything in your way. You have the ability to slow time and an ever growing arsenal of weaponry. Also, you can kick objects or enemies, split your aim between targets and dodge bullets by spinning. The game features parkour elements such as flips, wall jumps and rolls. These can be used to increase the number of points awarded at the end of missions. In turn, the points total determines your final letter grade.
My Friend Pedro is a really fun video game. One thing to note is that the controls certainly take a little bit of time to get used to. This is the type of game that requires genuine skill to be really good at. If you’re playing on higher difficulties then you’ll need quick reflexes. However, you can still succeed well enough by just blasting through the game. Still, getting an S rank on each level would be some task. I was more than happy with the 10 that I managed to obtain.
The first thing I really enjoyed about this game was the awesome soundtrack. It just fits perfectly and really gets your blood pumping. There’s something about the combination of music, slow-motion, bullets and blood that just makes me happy. It doesn’t take itself seriously in the slightest which only adds to the gratification.
This wasn’t a game I expected to get hooked on but I most certainly did. I told myself I’d play a few levels and before I knew it the credits were rolling. That’s testament to how much of a good time I had with My Friend Pedro. It won’t win any awards for its dated looking visuals but it makes up for it in other areas.
Overall, My Friend Pedro is an over the top good time. If you have a few hours to spare, then I highly recommend it.
