Game Review: Brotato (Xbox Series X)

A rogue-lite twin-stick style shoot ‘em up with a ‘short and sharp’ gameplay tactic to keep you coming back time and time again, Brotato is a mighty fine game. One designed to be super simple to pick up and play, but one with depth and a huge number of addictive features.

Pick a potato, there are plenty to choose from, and even more to unlock, then go to war.

Survival is the name of the game, and across 20 timed waves (unless you choose endless) you must move and shoot everything that comes at you. The enemies won’t stop coming, and with each wave, the difficulty increases. You’ll not only have to contend with more powerful enemy types, but more and more are thrown at you. It’s not Vampire Survivors’ level of insanity, not even close, but some waves can get a bit frantic.

To help you survive, and make the game so much more interesting, between waves you can boost your potato’s stats, equip weapons, unlock perks, and generally transform your character, ready for the next wave. This part of the game is where it’s at its most compelling and no two playthroughs feel the same.

This is because each potato comes with its own personal stats that change gameplay significantly and the number of weapons and items on offer means runs are rarely repeated. Almost everything has a drawback alongside its boost, so picking what works best for your current potato is important. Especially as prices go up (currency comes from killing enemies) and more and more powerful items become available.

Do you focus on melee attacks over ranged attacks? You better make sure you equip the right weapons to match your decision. How about speed over health? Be warned, things can get a bit tough in later waves and you will take damage. Want to be able to spend more in the shop? Improve your harvesting stat and look out for special items that boost it and lower prices.

It’s the aspect of the game that makes it so special and ensures the replay value.

The actual action part of the game might be satisfying and well done, but it’s not got enough going to on to be anything more than a footnote and seen as a lesser Vampire Survivors clone. Put the two together though, and we have one of hell of a game. You will want to complete a run with every single potato, that’s how addictive it is.
