EP Review: Zed Motel – Leave With Nothing (Self Released)
Zed Motel are a garage rock trio from Swansea that specialise in very loud fuzzy riffs, mixed with male/female vocal harmonies. Often described by their audiences as perhaps the loudest band they’ve ever witnessed, they’ve spent the last couple of years putting together DIY tours around the UK and honing our craft.
Their new EP, Leave with Nothing is out now.
Now, normally when a band is described as the ‘loudest band ever witnessed’ this may not translate to a record but good god, is it clear with Zed Motel. A band that knows how deliver enormous sounding fuzzed and fucked up riffs. All while having a bit of sexy groove, bursts of punkish energy and two different sets of vocals to enhance the experience. To say the opener, My Design captures the imagination, is an understatement.
The bar is set, Ramshackle has to at least meet it and bloody hell, does it. Zed Motel continuing to show just how catchy their brand of garage rock can be. while also being heavy as hell. The female vocals are the dominant force here and for good reason, they’re amazing! Domino then has a stop-start rhythm that keeps the EP musically varied and interesting. Before Hammerhead just out and out rocks and Mirror Ball makes up for the lack of sexy groove in the last few tracks by dialling it up here.
All good things must end though and it’s with Scratched that Zed Motel end their wicked EP, one last noisy and rocking number. One that kind of makes you want to dance which makes sense as if there’s one thing Leave With Nothing does, it’s making you want to experience Zed Motel live.
