EP Review: Wrex – This Hell Goes a Long Way Down (Self Released)

Wrex, the Brighton alternative punk duo, will release their debut EP, ‘This Hell Goes a Long Way Down’, on August 16th, 2024.

A very cool EP that showcases an array of creative ideas drawn from a wide world of alternative sounds. A bit punky with elements of EDM, fast and energetic, and not afraid to move into heavier territories, it’s a mishmash of genres, but put together in a stylish way by Wrex.

This is their showcase, and you can tell they’ve thrown their all into delivering both the best of what Wrex is and presenting the vision they have going forward. Lovably anthemic all the way through but tackling themes that are tangible and relatable. Themes that affect many, many people in some form or another.

It’s all part of the passionate Wrex display that is so impactful on this EP. Where six tracks don’t just offer up enjoyable and excitable alternative metal sounds, but also offer up the opportunity to let emotion in via the emotion that they are letting out. It’s an EP of strong feeling, that much is for sure.

How about the anthemic side of the band though? The side that makes you want to go a bit wild? It’s such an important part of the Wrex makeup and every track on this EP has something that hits. Something like the overall manic energy of Take A Walk, something like the punk fire of the title track, or something like the rocky foot-tapper that is S.A.D, a track with one hell of a chorus too.

Wrex sure do leave an impression.
