EP Review: Walpurgia – Altar of the Goatbaphomet (Helter Skelter/Regain Records)
From Helter Skelter Productions (distributed & marketed by Regain Records) comes Walpurgia’s debut mini-album, Altar of the Goatbaphomet. Available on June 30th on CD and 12” vinyl formats.
Hailing from Greece, Walpurgia were created in 2019 by Anno Bastardi with the intention to create blasphemous and apocalyptic war metal. A power-trio in the true sense of the word, the band features a wealth of underground experience in their ranks: Porphyrion (Nergal, Kawir, Cult of Eibon etc) spawned the seed and summoned the exiled beasts of Nyogtha (HATE MANIFESTO, BLACK BLOOD INVOCATION, Caedes Cruenta, Cult of Eibon etc) and Sadistic Necrofagos (Kawir, Caedes Cruenta, Ithaqua etc) to seal this pact in blood.
20+ minutes of unbridled blackened power, Walpurgia might be a new name but in their ranks they bring noise and horror from deep within the underground.
The harshness of the twisted and evil sounds is enough to turn the brain to mush. Yet from the very first sickening assault and guttural roar to the very last bone-scrapping riff and gurgle, Walpurgia don’t let up.
They’re not doing anything particularly ground-breaking but that doesn’t matter. It’s just good-old-fashioned nastiness in musical form.
