EP Review: Void of Light – Enshroud (Trepanation Recordings)
Following up their self-titled 2022 Trepanation Recordings debut, Glasgow’s Void of Light return with the two-track EP, Enshroud. Released on CD through Trepanation Recordings on the 24th of March 2023.
Two tracks, two brilliant examples of post-metal. Albeit not restricted by the expectations or demands of this particular sub-genre. For starters, Void of Light are far more imaginative and enigmatic when it comes to ambience, melody, and the harsher sides of metal. Both tracks offer deep and detailed journeys through a soundscape that ebbs and flows but can also be raging flood that chokes the life out of you.
Don’t let the two-track build of the EP fool you, both come in at nearly nine-minutes and both twist and turn in unexpected ways. Both are equally challenging, equally unconventional, and equally exhilarating. Both are also different enough to make this feel quite experimental. Deign Torrent is much more atmospheric and melodic, whereas Gild is harsher and darker sounding. Regardless of which is your favourite, there’s no denying the quality of both and what Void of Light are doing.
