EP Review: Vermont – Mature Minds For Overzealous Kids (Self Released)

Emerging from the roller coaster of the previous two years, the pandemic carried the weight of uncertainty for Melbourne based alternative rock outfit, Vermont. Passions and commitment to what was once what the quartet loved most was tested in some very unique ways, and looking towards their brand-new EP release, ‘Mature Minds for Overzealous Kids’ provided a beacon of hope for the alt rock outfit.

Says vocalist Joshua Swanwick:

It took a year in the making, and as a collective we knew that we wanted to strive for something more challenging and ultimately more superior than anything we’d attempted in the past.

Mature Minds for Overzealous Kids will be released on July 15th, 2022.

Big energy and big sound, Vermont’s alt-rock noise has an edge to it but still delivers catchy rhythms and infectious choruses. Exemplified by the opening anthem that is Over Our Head and complimented by a bit more melodrama and melody with Loathe. Both tracks really deliver on the robust modern rock sound that makes releases like this have massive crossover appeal.

Headlights and Numb make up the second part of the EP and see Vermont push their sound into even more modern territories (danceable, effects laden and eccentric) while still delivering growl and girth. Of the two, it’s Numb that stands out more but they’re both massive sounding track none the less.

Then it’s time for Memories. A track that sees Vermont go anthemic again, mixing melodic verses with a soaring chorus that gets right under the skin. Before Faceless wraps things up with a classy amount of emotive intensity.

Top stuff from this band, an EP that doesn’t just get the attention, it makes you want to tell everyone and anybody about its quality.
