EP Review: Velvet Fist – Space Face (Self Released)

Velvet Fist, a punk band from Leeds in the UK, have released their new EP ‘Space Face.’ This follow-up to 2022’s debut EP ‘Premature Emasculation’ sees the group tackling a variety of thought-provoking themes from intergalactic travel to French people being in love with grapefruits.

Get in, leave one hell of an impression, and get the f**k out. It’s Velvet Fist and they’re a bit good. This new EP features three tracks and each is as exciting and interesting as the other. The spirit of dingy underground clubs is in this band, but they have a refinement that puts them in the now.

Sitting somewhere between punk and rock, Monochrome Jones is certainly a funky start to the EP. A little danceable, quite infectious, and with plenty of liveliness. Then there is Pamplemousse, which just happens to be French for grapefruit. Here Velvet Fist combine bursts of punk energy and alternative poppiness, keeping things unusual but very addictive to listen to.

Finally, it’s SciFi Samurai and here, Velvet Fist ‘play to the crowd’ a bit more with a straight-forward high-energy banger. One that has such an infectious chorus, it’s very hard to not sing along loudly to it. It might not be as weird as the other two offerings, but it sure does hit right.

Impression made, let’s see what the future holds for this band, it’s seems like it will be exciting.
