EP Review: Unidad Trauma – Paradigma Egocéntrico Fatalista (Concreto Records)
Mexican death metal band Unidad Trauma will be releasing their new EP, ‘Paradigma Egoceìntrico Fatalista’, on April 17th via Concreto Records.
While, traditionally, we don’t think of Mexico when it comes to death metal greats, the country has provided us with plenty of noisy and brutish listens over the years and one such band making a hell of a lot of noise in recent times is Unidad Trauma. A raw death metal band with hardcore influences and punk sensibilities, the four-piece have found inspiration for this new EP in unexpected places.
‘Paradigma Egocéntrico Fatalista’ is a concept record based on a horrifying true case which took place in the 90’s in Japan. Hisachi Ouchi, the protagonist of this story lived through 83 days in a rapidly decaying body which had been exposed to nuclear radiation. Each song is a chapter of this story told through the eyes of the doctors and the patient.
Dark, and ripe for a band with heavy intentions to express themselves, Unidad Trauma’s approach is violent and vulgar. Delivering a cacophony of heavy noise across six garish tracks and an Intro/Outro. From the moment the record starts, the horror is front and centre, and then Cap. 1 – Del Tratamiento Al Tormento arrives in a whirlwind of tumultuous heaviness that has a rawness that makes the death metal sound even harsher, yet it is the hardcore stomp that makes it really notable.
The first of many harsh head bangers, Unidad Trauma take us on an interesting journey via a collection of crashing and smashing efforts. More effective ugliness, driven by varied tempos, with Cap. 2 – Cherenkov – Respirando Dolor. A level of thick savagery not heard elsewhere with Cap. 3 – Enfermedad Manifiesta. A showcase of outright death metal viciousness twisted by experimental touches with Cap. 4 – 3 Veces 3 (Dia 59), and the undeniable sound of horror, once again, with Cap. 5 – Intacto Corazon and Cap. 6 – A Su Merced (Día 83).
Conclusión – Paradigma Egocéntrico en una Intervención Médica might just be an outro (love the synth), but it’s welcome relief from the intensity that has been experienced across this EP. More than the sum of its parts, Unidad Trauma have created something with layers making it not only more listenable than most extreme offerings, but giving it replay value.
