EP Review: Ulth – Umidus Lacer Tecte Horrificus (Herbivorous Records)

Ulth is a two-piece acoustic band formed in Naples in 2018 with double intent: to reveal how Metal is a spirit transcending the sound of electric guitar, and to ensure the possibility of enjoying it when, during and after the apocalypse, the electricity will fail.

Umidus Lacer Tecte Horrificus is the title of their first EP, and it will be released on January 18th, 2023, via Herbivorous Records.

One thing this EP can certainly be called, is unique. Pushing acoustic instruments to their limits and making them sound so primeval. This four-track EP is extremely hard to categorise as all the elements you might point at as putting it in the black, death, doom, and so on, camp doesn’t quite exist. At least in the form they might normally do. That, in itself, makes the experience so much more interesting and exciting.

Ulth’s varying tempos, frantic strumming, dramatic melodic drops, garish vocalisation, and cleaner moments certainly make it feel so post-apocalyptic. Ulth might be the only metal band still putting out music once the end times have come and gone. So, in that regard, mission accomplished.

It is a fascinating listen overall, even if it will likely divide opinion.
