EP Review: Typecaste – Between Life (Flatspot Records)
After releasing a demo in 2017 and the EP Creature of Habit in 2018, Typecaste returns with their most transcendent work to date — Between Life, due out on Flatspot Records on February 14th 2020.
The Boston / Long Island 5-piece play blistering metallic-hardcore with an added dose of 90s alt-metal intensity that elevates their music into hitherto uncharted territory. The band features members of Rain of Salvation, Soul Provider, and Hell of Self, and has toured alongside the most prominent acts in contemporary metalcore, such as Vein, Jesus Piece, and Tourniquet.
A blistering smashmouth start in Memento Mori, Typecaste erupt with hostility that has all the snarl and bite of hardcore-punk but with a weightier metal edge. It’s manic and wild, an absolute head-banger of an opener.
The aggression is only just beginning though as Traverse’s desperate sounding vocals is backed by guitars that shake the guts and drums that are akin to trepanation being performed on you. Hypnagogic Hallucination is the grooviest of the bunch with an ending that is pure unadulterated heaviness and Under the Wreath shakes things up with just a touch of clean singing amongst the viciousness.
