EP Review: Trollfest – Happy Heroes (Napalm Records)
Legendary Norwegian outfit Trollfest is back with their new EP, Happy Heroes. Out on March 19th 2021 via Napalm Records.
Four tracks, three of which are covers. The theme of happiness is evident even before you hit play on the original offering, the title track. The story of an evil, self-righteous troll and superheroes you better not to call if you need help. The video alone is worth checking out.
If this track doesn’t put a smile on your face, you’re not listening to it loud enough. The unit’s folk metal ways proving to be as strong and fun in 2021 as it ever was. The chorus alone is pure sing-along heaven.
Elsewhere it’s a trio of covers that will certainly surprise even if ‘expect the unexpected’ is the mantra of Trollfest.
First up, Cartoon Heroes by Aqua. You know, the Barbie Girl lot. Having never heard the original, I had no idea what to expect here. However, the guest vocals of Miriam Renvåg Müller adds a lot to a hell of an upbeat track. One with a disgustingly catchy rhythm but in Trollfest’s iconic folk metal heavyweight sound.
Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry Be Happy is far more familiar and Trollfest really do it justice. Keeping the laidback edge but infusing it with their excellent penchant for destructive metal fun. Seriously, the insane bursts here will make the eyes water but put the silliest smile on the face.
Finally, Pharrell Williams’ iconic Happy gets the cover treatment. A track that I personally could happily see the back of. However, Trollfest certainly give it a new twist. Maybe the most lacking of the bunch even if the group vocals and hyper-pace goes get the foot tapping and head banging.
So much fun. At a time like this, the world needs this EP.
